Why your body reacts before you do

Your brain is not recording the present. It’s predicting based on the past.

When you lived through something overwhelming, your nervous system learned to stay ready. It made a rule: never again.

That rule lives in the body. A tone of voice, a smell, a pause in conversation can feel like danger, even when you know you are safe.

This is not weakness. It’s your smoke detector doing its job — firing before your thinking brain catches up.

Healing is not about deleting that rule. It’s about updating it, slowly, in safe relationships. Showing your body: that was then, this is now.

That update is possible. In neuroscience we call it neuroplasticity. In therapy we call it healing.
