What is Trauma?
Trauma refers to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope and causes lasting emotional, psychological, and physical effects. It is often characterized by feelings of helplessness, fear, and a loss of control. Traumatic events can vary widely and may include experiences such as accidents, natural disasters, violence, abuse, neglect, or witnessing or being involved in a life-threatening situation. Trauma can have a significant impact on a person’s mental health and well-being, leading to symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, and difficulty in relationships. Treatment and support are important for individuals who have experienced trauma to help them heal and regain a sense of safety and control in their lives.
Trauma and Disability
Trauma can be a significant consequence of both mental and physical disabilities. Individuals with disabilities may face various challenges, such as discrimination, social isolation, and limited access to resources and opportunities. These factors can contribute to a sense of helplessness, frustration, and vulnerability, leading to increased levels of stress and anxiety. Additionally, individuals with disabilities may also experience trauma as a result of past experiences, such as abuse, neglect, or accidents related to their disability.
Trauma could be emerged at any stage throughout the lifespan. A baby could develop trauma as a result of difficulties at birth, an expecting mom may experience pre-natal physical or emotional distress or elderlies may go through physical or mental disability that results in trauma.
